The Supergirl Jam

The Supergirl Jam street skateboarding competition will also be held on September 6 in Venice Beach. Pro skateboard street competitors include 2008 X-Games Champion Elissa Steamer (Ft. Myers, FL), Amy Caron (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Vanessa Torres (Orange County, Calif.), Lyn-z Adams Hawkins (Cardiff-by-the-sea, Calif.), Lacey Baker (Covina, Calif.), and Supergirl Pro-Am Jam gold medalist Leticia Bufoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Abby Zsarnay (Santa Paula, Calif.) will also compete in the event, having placed as the top amateur in the Supergirl Pro-Am Jam held on August 19 at Woodward West.
Lauren Perkins (Huntington Beach, Calif.) who took home the Supergirl Jam Skateboard Street title in last year’s event is sidelined this year, recovering from recent knee surgery, but she will be on-hand to support her fellow competitors. The competition will be tight with Bufoni, who took top prize in this year’s Supergirl Pro-Am Jam, trying to make it two wins in a row to sweep the Supergirl Jam skateboard events this year.
The Supergirl Jam series consisted of three stops this year – the Association of Surfing Professionals Grade-4 Supergirl Pro Junior contest that took place on August 15 & 16 in Oceanside, Calif.; the Supergirl Pro-Am Jam Skateboard Street competition that took place at Woodward West in Tehachapi, Calif., on August 19; and the Supergirl Jam finale at Venice Beach coming up on September 6 beginning at 11 a.m.
All of the day’s competitive action, and event highlights from the Supergirl Pro Junior and Supergirl Pro-Am Jam will be streamed LIVE on GO211.com and TheWB.com, the official online destination for the 2009 Supergirl Jam events and competitions.
Programming featuring all three stops in the Supergirl Jam event series will be televised this fall on networks to include CBS Sports, FUEL TV and Fox Sports Net.

BRAZILIAN RAPPER MV BILL VISIT L.A

Considered one of Brazil’s most controversial rappers, MV Bill will visit J.U.i.C.E.
- Hip Hop Youth Center in Los Angeles, on Sunday, June 14, 2009
He is arriving in the United States through a cultural exchange program coordinated by the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles (IVCLA) and during his stay in the Los Angeles, he will meet with fellow artists as well as organizations like J.U.i.C.E. (Justice by Uniting in Creative Energy) to discuss their approach to social services to at-risk urban youth.
MV Bill was born in the City of God, in the Western part of Rio de Janeiro, where he still lives today. The City of God is one of Rio’s poorest and roughest areas. He is a highly respected member of his community and media figure. Using rap music, he is well-known for chronicling the ongoing war in the favelas – the infamous ghettos of Brazil. Today, in addition to being a rapper and documentary filmmaker, MV Bill is one of the Brazil’s most important activists. Appointed a Citizen of the World by the UN in 2004, MV Bill’s social-artistic work has been officially recognized by the Brazilian government and by UNICEF.

Absinto

I have a confession to make: I like the stuff!
King of Spirits is made by L’Or in Prádlo. According to L’Or : “Prádlo is a great address for distillers, the water here is the best.”
It’s certainly a very popular brand in Prague. The taste is not to everyone’s liking, don’t expect a perfumed cloying sweetness, but rather a confident wormwood note without too much background noise. You’ll notice the herbs at the base of the bottle. King of Spirits is good company; a heady brew which is not for the shrinking violet, and then of course there’s the thujone!
Thujone is the active ingredient in wormwood and the sole reason that absinthe cannot be sold in any liquor stores across the USA. The law is unclear, but it seems that you may buy absinthe for personal use without any problem. People have run into problems where they have promoted absinthe parties and sold tickets (according to recent news reports) but that is a different matter altogether as one can be prosecuted for running vodka parties like that too.
King of Spirits is openly sold as being a thujone rich brew and King of Spirits Gold even claims to have levels of thujone at 100mg (the European Union max is 35mg)
I’ll keep drinking Czech absinth for the taste, the pleasure and the unique experience it offers. Well! I’ll sit back, take a sip of King of Spirits, and leave them to it.

ESPN Announces Equal Pay for 2009

ESPN Announces Equal Pay for 2009
Tuesday, 28 October 2008 20:59
As Peter Yoon of the LA Times wrote back in 2006: "Perhaps the biggest step forward during this year's (2006) X-Games came before the games even started". To recap for those of you that may not remember:
"On the eve of X Games 12, Alliance leadership/co-founders, CB Burnside, Mimi Knoop and Drew Mearns met with the ESPN boss (John Skipper) in a private board room at the Staples Center and struck what many consider will be an historic deal to bring women's actions sports to parity with the men's side - financially and in broadcast exposure - over the next year or two. "He was really good about not only listening to us, but he committed then and there to specific changes that will help all women action sports athletes - not just skaters - this year and on into the future," CB said after the meeting".
Just yesterday, ESPN announced equal prize money for men and women at all winter and summer X-Games events. The Alliance would like to extend a big "thank you" to John Skipper and ESPN corporate for not only following through on their promise, but more importantly, for doing the right thing for women in action sports. The Alliance is proud to have played such an important role in this historic milestone in womens action sports.
Press release from ESPN:
"ESPN is proud to announce that the X Games and Winter X Games will feature equal prize money for both men and women in 2009. ESPN has been a leader in promoting and programming women's athletics, and this recent action sports prize purse increase is the latest example. This past summer saw the X Games feature women's motocross for the first time, and the upcoming Winter X Games will feature a host of female Olympic medalists from several different countries. Starting with Winter X Games 13 in January, 2009, men and women athletes at all X Games events will compete for equal cash awards."
